Flannel (also called flannelette) is known for its nap, a fuzzy raised surface created by brushing the cotton to lift the fibres.  The nap is what gives flannel its soft, cosy feel.  The tiny fibres trap warm air close to the body, so the fabric feels warm without being heavy.  Flannel was first developed in Wales in the 17th century, and it remains a favourite for nightwear because cotton is breathable and absorbs moisture.
